What to Expect
One of the greatest obstacles to trying something new is fear of the unknown. It is important that you feel as comfortable as possible before coming to your first yoga class. Below are some of the questions we are often asked about what to expect.
What does Om mean?
Om is the universal symbol or sound of energy. It is an expression of
unity, the essence of the universe. To me, Om is a beautiful sound
we share to express our connection to each other and to our world.
All classes end by chanting Om in unison. Participation is of course,
optional, but after your first class, you can’t help but join
in!
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing that stays put as you move. On the bottom,
I prefer long yoga pants, light sweatpants or capris in summer. For
tops, I wear form fitting tank tops, short or long sleeved t-shirts.
Layers are great as we start cool, warm up during our practice and
tend to cool off quickly during relaxation.
What do I need to bring?
The most important item to bring is your Self. I have yoga mats, blankets
and props available for use. Most people eventually purchase their
own mat or rug, so if you have one, certainly bring it. Some like to
bring a water bottle with them as well.
What are the classes like?
All classes begin with a centering, which may be as simple as sitting,
relaxing and breathing or may be some form of guided meditation. We
will move through a warm up sequence followed by a series of yoga poses
and or/movements. All classes end with relaxation. There is often a
reading at the end of class, music is generally played throughout and
we usually end by chanting the sound of Om.
Will I hold up the class if I have never done this before?
No. All yoga classes at My Om Whole Fitness are multi-level. We encourage
beginners to try classes listed as “Kripalu Yoga”, but
newcomers are welcome to try any class that fits into their schedule.
The beauty
of our format is that students are able to move at their
own pace. Instruction is geared toward any beginners in class, while
more advanced students are free to vary their practice to make it more
challenging.
What if I’m not flexible?
No worries. Most of us were not flexible when we started doing yoga.
You would be surprised if you had seen how tight my body was in my
first yoga class. I couldn’t come close to touching my toes.
Yoga is a practice we use to become more flexible. No one is expected
to start there.
Will I lose weight?
Many people do lose weight by adding yoga alone to their exercise routine,
especially with a regular, more vigorous practice. Generally, the
healthy lifestyle yoga promotes encourages weight loss as an added
natural
benefit. You will, however, be more likely to notice toned muscles,
increased
strength and flexibility. Significant weight loss comes from modifications
in diet and increased aerobic activity. If losing weight is a goal
for you, take advantage of My Om Whole Fitness's personal
training services and we will devise a specific achievable
plan for you.
What else can you tell me?
It is best to practice yoga on an empty stomach. Refrain from eating
a full meal for 2 hours before class. Light, healthy snacks are fine.
Please try to arrive 10 minutes prior to class. This gives you time
to settle in, allows us to space the room well and prevents disrupting
others with a late arrival. If you do arrive after the start of class,
you are welcome to join us. Please remember to turn of your cell phone.
